The Rongai route is one of the easiest ascents to the peak. It has a well-defined path where most obstacles have been modified to make it accessible, and it is widely considered the best route to see wildlife on the mountain. No technical climbing skills are required — you simply need to be reasonably fit. Treks start north of Marangu Gate near the Kenyan border, giving Rongai its distinctly remote, wilderness feel.

The northern approach through coniferous forest is drier and less trafficked than the southern routes, with excellent sightings of mountain wildlife along the lower slopes. The route ascends via Simba Camp, Kikelewa Camp (with the finest views of Kibo Volcano), and Mawenzi Tarn Camp at the foot of Kilimanjaro's dramatic second summit. Day 4 includes a 200-metre acclimatisation hike up Mawenzi Volcano. Summit day departs from School Hut Camp and descends via the Marangu route to Horombo Hut. A dedicated guide accompanies each pair of climbers throughout the summit day.

Elevation: 2,020m → 2,625mDistance: 8kmTime: 3–4 hoursHabitat: Coniferous Forest

Your guide and mountain support crew meet you at the hotel for a quick briefing before travelling by vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Park's northern entrance — Nalemuru Gate (2,020m). After acquiring climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, begin trekking up Kilimanjaro's northern slope through the coniferous forest.

This is a moderate day's trekking — remember not to hurry and always keep a comfortable pace. This northern approach is the least trafficked of all major Kilimanjaro routes, with excellent opportunities to spot mountain wildlife in the forest. By the time you reach Simba Camp, the mountain crew will have prepared everything, erected tents and have dinner ready.

Night departure from School Hut Camp — the start of your ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The trekking is moderate from a physical standpoint, but altitude presents a serious challenge. Throughout the entire summit day, each pair of climbers is accompanied by their own dedicated guide, who monitors both stamina and mental resolve — a reassuring distinction of the Rongai route summit experience.

After your successful ascent to Uhuru Peak, you can descend to the nearest glacier if desired. Return to Kibo Camp for a two-hour rest, then continue the long descent to Horombo Camp (3,720m). Dinner and overnight at Horombo.
