Face to Face with the Mountain Gorilla

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife destinations — the home of mountain gorillas, one of the world's most endangered great apes. The dense, ancient forest on the slopes of the Virunga mountains in southwest Uganda protects over half the world's entire mountain gorilla population: approximately 500 individuals in 50+ social groups, some of which have been habituated to human presence and can be visited daily.

Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is one of the most profound wildlife experiences on earth. After a briefing at the park headquarters, small groups of eight visitors trek into the forest with experienced rangers and trackers. The trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours depending on the gorilla family's position. When you find them — and you always do — an hour spent with a habituated mountain gorilla family in their natural habitat is one of those rare experiences that fundamentally changes your sense of what is possible.

Beyond the gorillas, Bwindi is a biodiversity hotspot of extraordinary richness. Its ancient Afromontane forest — one of the oldest in Africa, having survived the last ice age intact — supports over 350 bird species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics, 120 mammal species, and extraordinary plant diversity.

Mountain Gorillas & Albertine Rift Life

Bwindi's wildlife reflects its extraordinary position on the Albertine Rift — a centre of African biodiversity unmatched in the continent. Mountain gorillas are the headline, but the forest is alive with chimpanzees, rare birds and rich mammal communities.

Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Each habituated gorilla family is visited by a group of eight visitors, accompanied by two armed rangers and experienced trackers. Your hour with the family begins when the trackers locate the group. You may find them resting, feeding, playing — silverbacks displaying, infants tumbling, mothers nursing. The guides control distance (7 metres minimum) but gorillas often approach closer. The hour passes like seconds. Many visitors describe it as one of the most emotional experiences of their lives.

Birding & Other Wildlife

Bwindi is one of Africa's premier birding destinations — the Albertine Rift endemics alone make it worth the journey. The African green broadbill, Shelley's crimsonwing, bar-tailed trogon and Grauer's warbler are among the prizes. Chimpanzees are present and sometimes habituated in adjacent forests. The night forest in Bwindi is extraordinary — tree hyraxes call eerily, owls hunt, and the silence between their calls is ancient.

Peak — Best conditions
Good — Great experience, fewer crowds
Green season — Lush, birdlife, lower prices

June – September (Dry)

Best trekking conditions — trails dry, forest more navigable. Gorilla permits very hard to get. Book 12+ months in advance for peak months.

December – February

Short dry season — very good trekking. Popular with those combining Uganda with Kenya/Tanzania. Permits easier to get than peak season.

March – May (Long Rains)

Very wet — trails muddy and difficult. Fewer tourists means permits sometimes available at shorter notice. Gorillas still found but trekking is harder.

Year-round

Gorilla trekking operates year-round — gorillas are resident and always present. The quality of the encounter is unchanged by season. The trek difficulty varies.

What to Expect

Permits & Booking

Gorilla trekking permits cost USD 700 per person per trek in Uganda (compared to USD 1,500 in Rwanda). Only 8 visitors per family group per day — this strict limit is what makes the experience so intimate. Book permits through Dawn Safaris well in advance. We handle all permit allocation, logistics and paperwork. Permits are allocated to specific family groups — we choose based on fitness and preference.

Getting There

Fly to Entebbe International Airport (Kampala, Uganda). From Entebbe, charter flights serve Kihihi airstrip (30 minutes drive from Bwindi) or Kisoro airstrip (1.5 hours). Road transfer from Kampala to Bwindi takes 8–10 hours. Most itineraries combine Bwindi with Queen Elizabeth National Park (chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions) and/or Murchison Falls for a comprehensive Uganda circuit.

What to Pack

  • Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support (essential)
  • Waterproof trousers and jacket
  • Gardening gloves for pulling on thor
ns
  • Long sleeves (scratches from vegetation)
  • Insect repellent (DEET)
  • Gaiters for muddy trails
  • Knee pads (optional but helpful on steep descents)
  • Camera — no flash photography with gorillas
  • Health & Fitness

You must be at least 15 years old to trek. No upper age limit but reasonable fitness required — the trek can involve steep, slippery terrain at 1,500–2,400m altitude. If diagnosed with any contagious illness (even a cold), you will not be permitted to trek — gorillas are susceptible to human respiratory diseases. Altitude sickness is unlikely at Bwindi but carry medication. Anti-malarials required.
