Face to Face with the Mountain Gorilla
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park is one of Africa's most extraordinary wildlife destinations — the home of mountain gorillas, one of the world's most endangered great apes. The dense, ancient forest on the slopes of the Virunga mountains in southwest Uganda protects over half the world's entire mountain gorilla population: approximately 500 individuals in 50+ social groups, some of which have been habituated to human presence and can be visited daily.
Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is one of the most profound wildlife experiences on earth. After a briefing at the park headquarters, small groups of eight visitors trek into the forest with experienced rangers and trackers. The trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 8 hours depending on the gorilla family's position. When you find them — and you always do — an hour spent with a habituated mountain gorilla family in their natural habitat is one of those rare experiences that fundamentally changes your sense of what is possible.
Beyond the gorillas, Bwindi is a biodiversity hotspot of extraordinary richness. Its ancient Afromontane forest — one of the oldest in Africa, having survived the last ice age intact — supports over 350 bird species including 23 Albertine Rift endemics, 120 mammal species, and extraordinary plant diversity.
