The Lemosho route is one of the newer routes on Kilimanjaro and our preferred route, due to its ideal balance of low trail traffic, beautiful scenery and a high summit success rate. The route approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the west, beginning with a long drive from Moshi to Londorossi Gate. The first two days are spent trekking through the rainforest to Shira Ridge.

Unlike the popular Machame route, which simply intersects the Shira Plateau, the Lemosho route crosses the entirety of the plateau from west to east in a pleasant, relatively flat hike. An added bonus is that climbers encounter low traffic until the route joins the Machame route at Lava Tower. Afterwards, Lemosho follows the same southern circuit through Lava Tower, Barranco and Barafu. Descent is made via the Mweka route. Lemosho grants panoramic vistas on various sides of the mountain — and is highly recommended.

Day by Day Breakdown

01
Day One
Arusha — Londorossi Gate — Shira I Camp
📍 Londorossi Gate → Shira I · 3,480m
+
Elevation: 3,480m (11,420ft) Distance: 14km / 8.7 miles Time: 6–8 hours Altitude gain: 830m / 2,725ft

Drive from Arusha to the Londorossi Gate on the western side of Kilimanjaro — a long but scenic journey through Tanzanian farmland and savannah. After registration at the gate, begin trekking through pristine montane rainforest — the Lemosho trailhead is one of the most remote and unspoiled entry points on the mountain.

The forest gives way to open moorland as you approach the Shira Ridge, with the vast Shira Plateau coming into view ahead. Arrive at Shira I camp as evening sets in. Dinner and overnight at camp.

Day Two
Shira I to Shira Huts via Shira Cathedral
📍 Shira I (3,480m) → Shira Huts (3,850m)
+
Elevation: 3,480m → 3,850m (12,630ft) Distance: 11km / 6.8 miles Time: 6–8 hours Altitude gain: 370m / 1,210ft

Today crosses the full breadth of the Shira Plateau — a unique feature of the Lemosho route. While the Machame route merely intersects the plateau, Lemosho traverses it entirely from west to east in a relatively flat, pleasant hike with magnificent open views across the plateau to Kibo's summit cone.

The route passes via Shira Cathedral — a dramatic rock formation on the plateau's ridge — before arriving at the Shira Huts camp. This full crossing of the plateau is one of the most enjoyable and visually rewarding days on any Kilimanjaro route. Dinner and overnight at Shira Huts.

Day Three
Shira Huts — Lava Tower — Barranco Huts
📍 Shira Huts → Lava Tower (4,640m) → Barranco Huts (3,985m)
+
Elevation: 3,850m → 4,640m → 3,985m (13,070ft) Distance: 9km / 5.6 miles Time: 6–8 hours Altitude gain: 135m net (790m to Lava Tower)

Depart the Shira Plateau climbing east past the iconic Lava Tower at 4,640m — a dramatic volcanic plug rising from the alpine desert landscape. Here the Lemosho route merges with the Machame route for the remainder of the ascent. The high point at Lava Tower is critical for acclimatisation before descending to Barranco.

Descend to the Barranco Huts camp — although you end the day close to the elevation at which you started, the acclimatisation gain from reaching 4,640m is significant for your summit preparation. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Huts.

Day Four
Barranco Huts to Karanga Camp
📍 Barranco Huts (3,985m) → Karanga Camp (4,040m)
+
Elevation: 3,985m → 4,040m (13,255ft) Distance: 5.5km / 3.5 miles Time: 4–5 hours Altitude gain: 55m / 185ft

A shorter day beginning with the famous Barranco Wall scramble — the most dramatic section of the southern circuit. The wall looks intimidating but is not technically difficult; your certified guides assist at every step. The views from the top are extraordinary.

Continue across the Karanga Valley to the Karanga Camp, passing through the increasingly arid alpine zone. The summit cone now dominates the skyline. A shorter distance today allows the body to rest and continue acclimatising before the final high-camp push tomorrow. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

Day Five
Karanga Camp to Barafu Huts — High Camp
📍 Karanga Camp (4,040m) → Barafu Huts (4,680m)
+
Elevation: 4,040m → 4,680m (15,360ft) Distance: 3.5km / 2.2 miles Time: 4–5 hours Altitude gain: 640m / 2,105ft

A shorter but steep climb to Barafu Huts — the high camp and final resting point before tomorrow's summit push. The landscape is now fully alpine desert; vegetation is minimal, the air is noticeably thin, and both the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are dramatically visible.

Arrive at Barafu in the afternoon, make camp, eat an early dinner and rest as much as possible. Summit night begins at midnight — sleep, hydrate well and prepare your summit gear carefully. Overnight at Barafu Huts.

Summit Day ★

📍 Barafu (4,680m) → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Millennium Camp (3,820m)
+
Ascent: 5km · 5–6hrs + 1–2hrs to summit Descent: 10km · 5–6hrs Total: 10–16 hours Stella Point: 5,752m (18,871ft) Uhuru Peak: 5,895m (19,340ft) Descent: 2,075m / 6,810ft

Summit night begins at midnight. The ascent to Stella Point (5,752m) via the crater rim is the most physically and mentally demanding section of the entire route — climbing through loose scree in the dark at extreme altitude. At Stella Point, rest briefly and witness the most extraordinary sunrise imaginable, with the Tanzanian plains spread thousands of metres below in every direction.

From Stella Point, continue 1–2 hours to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest point on the African continent, and the highest free-standing mountain on earth. From the summit, descend to Millennium Camp (3,820m) or Mweka Hut, stopping at Barafu for lunch on the way down. Dinner and overnight at Millennium Camp.
