The World's Greatest Wildlife Spectacle

The Serengeti is the oldest and largest national park in Tanzania, and one of the most famous wildlife destinations on earth. Stretching across 14,763 square kilometres of open savannah, grassland plains, kopjes (rocky outcrops), riverine forest and rolling hills, it forms part of the greater Serengeti-Mara ecosystem — a continuous wilderness extending into Kenya's Maasai Mara. Together, this is the largest intact tropical savannah on earth.

The Serengeti is home to the Great Migration — the annual movement of over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by 250,000 zebra and 500,000 Thomson's gazelle, following the rains around the ecosystem in an endless cycle of life and death. This is not a single event but a continuous, year-round movement — calving on the southern plains in January, northward migration through the dry season, dramatic Mara River crossings in July–October, then back south again. There is no 'wrong' time to witness it.

Beyond the migration, the Serengeti supports extraordinary permanent resident wildlife. The central Seronera Valley has one of the highest concentrations of leopard in Africa. The western Serengeti harbours huge herds of buffalo and elephant. The north (Lamai Wedge) offers exceptional lion, cheetah and wild dog sightings.

The Great Migration

The annual migration is not a single event — it is continuous. In January and February, the herds calve on the southern Ndutu plains. March–May, they drift north through the central Serengeti. June sees them concentrated on the western corridor. July–October, they push north for the Mara River crossings — the most dramatic moment in the natural world, where tens of thousands of wildebeest launch themselves into crocodile-filled water. November–December sees the return south. Dawn Safaris can position you at the right place at the right time of year.

Leopard & Predator Density

The Seronera Valley in the central Serengeti has one of the highest concentrations of large predators in Africa. Multiple lion prides dominate territories around the kopjes. Leopards rest in the sausage trees and fig trees flanking the Seronera River — arguably the most reliable leopard sighting area in Africa. Cheetah are regularly spotted on the open plains. Spotted hyena are extremely common.

The Mara River crossings in the northern Serengeti — the most dramatic migration spectacle. Book northern camps (Lamai, Kuria Hills) and plan a 4+ night stay.

June (Dry Season, Western Corridor)

Wildebeest concentrated in the western corridor before moving north. Western Serengeti camps positioned for dramatic sightings. Excellent predator activity.

March – May (Green Season)

Long rains — fewer tourists, beautiful landscape, much lower prices. Wildlife excellent in Seronera year-round. Good photography conditions.
