Indian Ocean · White Sand · Swahili Culture · Coral Reefs
Mombasa is Kenya's oldest and most storied city — a port that has traded with Arabia, India, Persia and China for over a thousand years. Standing at the heart of this history is Fort Jesus, the 16th-century Portuguese fortification that once controlled trade on the East African coast and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The old town's narrow streets — lined with carved wooden doors, latticed balconies and the scent of cardamom and cloves — transport visitors to a world where Swahili, Arabic and Indian cultures have blended into something entirely unique.
South of Mombasa city, the coastline stretches to Diani Beach — consistently ranked among Africa's finest beaches, with powdery white sand, warm turquoise water and good coral reefs teeming with marine life. Diani's coconut palms, luxury resorts and watersports make it the most developed coastal destination in Kenya. North of the city, Watamu, Malindi and Kilifi offer equally beautiful but quieter alternatives.
Kenya's coastal marine parks protect some of the most biologically diverse coral reef ecosystems in the western Indian Ocean. Snorkelling and diving around the Watamu, Malindi and Shimba Hills marine reserves reveals sea turtles, manta rays, whale sharks (seasonal) and extraordinary reef fish communities. Dolphin watching and deep-sea fishing are also popular activities.
The Kenya coast offers a completely different wildlife experience from the savannah safari — from coral reef ecosystems to sea turtles to the lush coastal forest of Shimba Hills, where sable antelope and leopard live just 30 minutes from Diani Beach.
Kenya's Marine National Parks and Reserves protect significant stretches of coral reef. The Watamu Marine National Park is one of the best preserved on the East African coast — snorkelling here reveals hawksbill and green sea turtles, lionfish, parrotfish and dozens of reef species. Watamu Turtle Watch runs conservation programmes allowing visitors to assist with turtle nest monitoring. Whale sharks appear off the Kenya coast seasonally (October–February).
Just 30 minutes inland from Diani Beach, the Shimba Hills National Reserve protects a remarkable area of coastal forest and grassland. It is the only place in Kenya to see the sable antelope — one of Africa's most striking animals, the males jet-black with sweeping curved horns. Elephant, leopard and the rare colobus monkey are also present. A visit easily combines with a beach day.
Mombasa & Kenya Coast is exceptional year-round — but each season offers a different kind of experience. Here is our guide.
The best beach weather. Clear skies, warm sea (26°C), light breezes. January–February is peak whale shark season. Diani at its finest.
Second dry season — still excellent beach conditions. Strong winds make kitesurfing particularly good. Slightly cooler and refreshing.
Good conditions with minimal rain. Long-haul whale watching possible. Fewer tourists than peak season — better rates.
Heavy rainfall on the coast — not ideal for beach holidays, though some visitors enjoy the lush green landscape and dramatically reduced prices.
Mombasa's Moi International Airport receives multiple daily flights from Nairobi (1 hour) and some direct international routes. The SGR express train from Nairobi to Mombasa takes approximately 4.5 hours and passes through spectacular landscapes. South Coast (Diani) is reached via a short ferry crossing or the Southern bypass. North Coast beaches (Watamu, Malindi) are 1–2 hours north of Mombasa city.
Exchange currency in Mombasa city — rates better than at airport. Mombasa Old Town is safe to walk but a guide adds context. Bargaining is expected at Biashara Street market. Beach boys at Diani can be persistent — establish boundaries politely. Malaria risk exists on the coast — prophylaxis recommended.
