Indian Ocean · Spice Island · White Sand & UNESCO Old Town
Zanzibar — the 'Spice Island' — is an archipelago of extraordinary historical depth and natural beauty off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean. Stone Town, the ancient core of Zanzibar City, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: a labyrinthine medina of coral stone buildings, carved wooden doors, mosques, Hindu temples and narrow streets alive with the scent of cloves, cardamom and cinnamon. It represents the unique fusion of Arab, Persian, African and Indian cultures that define the Swahili civilisation.
The island was the epicentre of the East African spice trade and the Indian Ocean slave trade for centuries. Sultans of Oman ruled from Zanzibar, and the island was briefly its own sultanate — the 'Zanzibar Sultanate' — before British influence and eventually union with Tanzania in 1964. This complex history is woven into every street, building and conversation in Stone Town.
Beyond the cultural richness, Zanzibar delivers some of East Africa's finest beaches. The north coast's Nungwi and Kendwa offer calm clear water year-round. The northeast coast's Matemwe and Kiwengwa face the open ocean with spectacular colour. The southeast coast's Paje is East Africa's top kitesurfing destination. The less-visited south and west coasts offer mangrove ecosystems, fishing villages and extraordinary sunsets.
Zanzibar's wildlife combines unique island species with extraordinary Indian Ocean marine life. The endemic Zanzibar red colobus is found nowhere else on earth. The waters surrounding the island support dolphins, sea turtles, whale sharks and diverse reef ecosystems.
Jozani Forest, on the south coast of Zanzibar, is the last significant area of indigenous forest on the island and the only place on earth where the Zanzibar red colobus monkey lives in the wild. Approximately 2,500 individuals remain. They are approachable and unafraid of visitors — making for extraordinary close encounters in the forest. The forest also supports the rare Ader's duiker, mongoose and numerous bird species.
Dolphin-watching trips operate from Kizimkazi on Zanzibar's south coast — spinner and bottlenose dolphins are reliably present. Mnemba Atoll, off the northeast coast, is East Africa's finest dive site: clear warm water and extraordinary coral diversity. Sea turtles nest on several beaches. Whale sharks pass through Zanzibar channels in seasonal movements (October–February). Humpback whales migrate past the island from July to September.
Zanzibar is exceptional year-round — but each season offers a different kind of experience. Here is our guide.
The best beach weather. Clear skies, warm water. North coast perfectly calm. Peak season for kitesurfing on the southeast coast. Humpback whales passing.
Excellent beach conditions. Whale shark season (Oct–Feb). Christmas/New Year popular — book well ahead.
Heavy tropical rain but not continuous. Stone Town visits and cultural activities work well. Significant hotel discounts.
Brief rains between main seasons. Still warm and swimmable. Shoulder season pricing. Whale sharks often present.
Zanzibar International Airport receives multiple daily flights from Nairobi (45 minutes), Dar es Salaam (20 minutes), Kilimanjaro (50 minutes) and Arusha (1 hour). There are also regular high-speed ferry services from Dar es Salaam (2 hours). Zanzibar is an ideal add-on at the end of any Kenya or Tanzania safari — Dawn Safaris can arrange the connecting flights seamlessly.
Stone Town is a largely Muslim community — dress modestly when exploring (cover shoulders and knees). Respect for prayer times and Friday mosque visits appreciated. Bargaining expected in the Darajani market. Female solo travellers should be appropriately dressed and walk with purpose in the old town. Zanzibari people are generally very welcoming to respectful visitors.
